School Jazz Ensembles to Rally Monday at Anthology

San Diego middle and high school jazz groups band together on behalf of their imperiled teachers

University City High School Jazz Ensemble tenor saxophonist Jeremy Kern sprang into action when he learned 44 visual arts and performing arts teaching positions in the San Diego Unified School District are in jeopardy because of budget cuts. The tenth grader helped spearhead “Jazz in the Schools: A Benefit Concert,” which will feature six area high school and middle school jazz ensembles performing at downtown’s all-ages Anthology on Monday, June 11.

All told, 1,534 San Diego Unified teachers received final layoff notices at the end of May. Some could be rehired if the teachers union agrees to concessions, or to replace teachers who are retiring or on leave of absence. For now, many face at least a summer of unemployment.
